چکیده

Forestry practices produce intense alterations on soil processes, which in turn could lead to more intense transformations of the system in relation to the availability of resources. From this point of view we conducted research in the critical Mediterranean environment of central Spain to check if length of time-rotation on chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) coppice stand allows recovery towards pre-disturbance conditions. According to the management scheme for chestnut forests in the zone, the quadrants which were clear-cut in 1957, 1967, 1982 and 1993 were used to build a chronosequence. Ten plots were allocated and physiographic, soil and forestry variables were measured to build a linear model in which the time since the last clear-felling was considered as a fixed variable. Almost all soil variables showed no significant differences between the studied stand-ages, but organic matter, nitrogen and potassium content showed an intense depletion after clear-cutting. The sustainability of this management scheme, as is shown in our results, is primarily based on the ability of chestnut trees to rapidly recover their canopy structure from rootstock as well as, from a forestry perspective, on a twofold increase in timerotation (in more mesic chestnut stands of Mediterranean Spain, clear-cuts are conducted after 20 years). Under stressful conditions of our stands, maximum productivity (20 years) does not coincide with the time to soil recovery (40–50 years) and consequently this management scheme has lengthened the time-rotation interval to guarantee viability of the stand. # 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. The influence of American Chestnut (Castanea dentata) on nitrogen availability, organic matter and chemistry of silty and sandy loam soils

American chestnut trees once dominated vast areas of deciduous forest in eastern North America, but the exotic chestnut blight almost eliminated the species from the region. Introduction of blight-resistant American chestnut hybrids will probably start in the next decade after many years of tree breeding. What were the historic effects of chestnut on forest soils, and what changes may follow re...

Clear cutting and burning affect nitrogen supply, phosphorus fractions and seedling growth in soils from a Wyoming lodgepole pine forest

Timber harvesting, with and without prescribed slash ®re, and wild ®re are common disturbances in pine forests of western North America. These disturbances can alter soil nitrogen (N) pools and N supply to colonizing vegetation, but their in ̄uence remains poorly understood for many forests. We investigated the effects of clear cut harvesting and ®re on KCl extractable N pools, net N mineralizat...

Effect of Land Use Change on Carbon Content and CO2 Flux of Cloud Forest Soils, Santa Elena, Costa Rica

We investigated the effects of land-use changes on soil carbon storage and soil CO2 flux by comparing soils from mature cloud forest and 31-year-old secondary forest, both in the Santa Elena Forest Reserve, a municipallyowned reserve at an elevation of 1600 to 1700 m near the town of Monteverde, and a clear-cut pasture near the reserve. Soils in the mature forest exhibit only weak horizonation ...

Bayesian analysis of the species-specific lengthening of the growing season in two European countries and the influence of an insect pest

A recent lengthening of the growing season in mid and higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere is reported as a clear indicator for climate change impacts. Using data from Germany (1951-2003) and Slovenia (1961-2004), we study whether changes in the start, end, and length of the growing season differ among four deciduous broad-leaved tree species and countries, how the changes are related to...

Comparison of Plant Growth Regulators and Exogenous Ethylene Effects on Two Types of Cut Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.)

The main object of this study is to investigate the effect of plant growth regulators on the prolongation of vase life of two kinds of cut carnation under normal and ethylene. Carnation is one of the most popular flowers that has a short life due to its sensitivity to ethylene. Also, the effect of plant growth regulators on several physiological traits under ethylene stress and normal condition...
